Explore the unique Lavascape of Saddle Road and the Live Volcano of Kilauea

Between the tallest volcanoes in Hawaii, Mauna Kea & Mauna Loa, we will explore a unique Lava landscape, and hike up a small cinder cone, into a Kipuka, a native Koa forest sanctuary. We will be able to date different lava flows based on their hue in the landscape.

Since the 17th Century, royal Hawaiian dynasties have resided at this magnificent location nestled amidst towering palmtrees, Pu’u Honua O’ Honaunau is a small oasis of refuge found in the rugged lavascape of the South Kona Coast.  We will visit Kealekekua Bay, another cultural historic site where Capt. Cook first landed on Hawai’i, and met his demise.  Along the way we will drive past coffee farms, and other historically remarkable sites, as time permits.

Hawaii’s Hamakua Coast offers unique rainforest valleys with rivers and waterfalls which we can explore and photograph. Waipio, a verdant green and sacred place was the first valley to be settled by Hawaiian royal families. This dramatic coastal valley was the site of Hawaiian royalty for generations.  Now a graceful jungle with towering waterfalls, a beautiful gray-sand beach and rivers for us to drive through.

We will be enjoying a picnic lunch on the beach after taking in Waipio’s majesty.

Big Island Full Day – Saddle Road and Kilauea

Between the tallest volcanoes in Hawaii, Mauna Kea & Mauna Loa, we will explore a unique Lava landscape, and hike up a small cinder cone, into a Kipuka, a native Koa forest sanctuary. We will be able to date different lava flows based on their hue in the landscape and explore a lava tube with flashlights.

Grab Lunch in Hilo, and head up to the active volcano Kiluaea for dessert! We will walk along archways of giant ferns, and view the Kiluaea Caldera, and the rising smoke of Halema’uma’u. A rare glimpse of the Apapane feeding on the majestic native Ohia Lehua trees is possible. On occasions, we’ll start South from Kona, and visit historic cultural sites, a black sand beach with palmtrees and a lagoon, where we have seen Hawaiian monk seal, and traverse black lavascape of the Ka’u Desert on our way to the volcano.
