Big Island Full Day – Saddle Road and Kilauea
Explore the Unique Lavascape of Saddle Road and the Live Volcano of Kilauea
Between the tallest volcanoes in Hawaii, Mauna Kea & Mauna Loa, we will explore a unique Lava landscape, and hike up a small cinder cone, into a Kipuka, a native Koa forest sanctuary. We will be able to date different lava flows based on their hue in the landscape and explore a lava tube with flashlights.
Grab Lunch in Hilo, and head up to the active volcano Kiluaea for dessert! We will walk along archways of giant ferns, and view the Kiluaea Caldera, and the rising smoke of Halema’uma’u. A rare glimpse of the Apapane feeding on the majestic native Ohia Lehua trees is possible. On occasions, we’ll start South from Kona, and visit historic cultural sites, a black sand beach with palmtrees and a lagoon, where we have seen Hawaiian monk seal, and traverse black lavascape of the Ka’u Desert on our way to the volcano.
